Rug Care, Maintenance and Repair
Whether you got a good deal on a rug, or you paid more than the cost of your first car on your rug, you'll want to
take the proper steps to take care of your rug to make sure it lasts for years and years. Here you will find some
valuable information to keep your rug in tip top shape. These tips should be used in cleaning and caring for your
rug on a regular basis.
Professional Cleaning:
Your handmade area rug should be hand-washed by a pro every five to 10 years to help it maintain its original color.
Be sure to check their references as well. Also, be sure to never use chemicals on your rug, steam clean your rug,
put your rug in a washing machine, or submerge your rug in water.
Vacuum:
Don't use a floor vacuum directly on your rug. That is, you may use the extensions if they do not have the rotating
brush as found on a typical vacuum. Suction on the rug should only be performed smoothly with the direction of the
pile, and not against it.
Beating:
The proper way to beat your rug is from the bottom, or rear, as it hangs or is held on end. You may use a broomstick,
or something similar to beat your handmade rug.
Sweep:
If there is a dry spill or debris on your rug, you may sweep your rug with a soft indoor broom. Be sure to go in the
direction of the pile as in vacuuming your rug.
Blotting:
Wet spills need immediate attention. The longer the wet spill is on your rug, the more likely it will stain the rug's
pile. Paper towels may be effective and cold water can be used to dilute the remaining liquid. If the stain is
persistant, mild wool detergent may be used sparingly, mixed with cold water. Be sure to apply plenty of pressure
while blotting and refrain from rubbing.
Rug Repair:
One great thing about handmade area rugs is that tears or cuts can be easily repaired in many cases. Silk thread is
recommended since it is found to be stronger and more fine than either wool or cotton thread. A professional is
strongly suggested for any repairs of handmade area rugs as they will know how to properly join the rug's knots from
underneath and will be able to use the same foundation material. Doing so will keep your rug looking like new!
Pets:
Animals that have not been housebroken should not be allowed near your valuable handmade area rugs if you wish to
preserve their appearance. A quality handmade rug is a great family heirloom, but you don't want to pass down
Fluffy's "gift" as well...
Furniture:
If you're planning on placing any large furniture on your handmade area rug, be sure to use coasters. Place coasters
under all legs, or casters, of your furniture so the weight is evenly dispersed.
Padding:
Using under-padding actually provides better air flow between your rug and the floor and can help keep your rug in
place. The extra padding also can prevent the rug's pile from wearing down from extended use. Using under-padding
can help extend your area rug's life.
